Chocolate is not your run-of-the-mill confection. For many of us, it holds a special place in our hearts and we’ve several endearing memories that are connected to it. For children it is the most important food group. It’s an indispensable asset when attempting to woo the apple of your eye. When words fail you in the attempt to apologize for a wrongdoing, chocolate heals all wounds faster than time could ever hope to. It’s as versatile as it is delicious. It’s no surprise the Aztecs called it “the food of gods.”
In its long and rich history, it’s been used as a currency, a medicine, even as an aphrodisiac and a sinful indulgence. In the early Modern period, when chocolate was first imported to Spain, it was so expensive that only the nobility could afford to indulge in it. Fast forward approximately half a millennium and things have certainly changed. Chocolate is almost as ubiquitous as water, from hot cocoa to candy bars, cakes, and bread. It’s hard to avoid—but why would you want to?
