Latte macchiato is one of the most popular espresso-based drinks. Whether it’s with brunch, lunch, or a slice of cake—this café classic can be enjoyed no matter the occasion.

Hailing from Italy, it was originally served to children because of its low caffeine content. Today, it’s a symbol of chic urbanity, enjoyed by patrons in street cafes or from the comfort of home.

Beyond being a well-loved beverage, the latte macchiato is also a work of coffee art. Layering the frothed milk and espresso is a craft in its own right. To do so, pour 200 ml of frothed milk into a glass, followed by espresso. The trick is, in essence, to let the milk stand long enough to allow the milk foam to form its own separate layer. To achieve this effect, it’s important that you add the espresso slowly. Using freshly brewed espresso that’s hotter than the milk is also essential.
