Demystifying the Caveman Diet with Paleo360

An urban take on the hunter-gatherer lifestyle

We’ve already broken a sweat climbing up the endless stairs to the apartment on the 5th floor, whilst Nico and Michaela Richter bound up ahead of us effortlessly. We’ve seen how fit they are and it’s only 8am, making us wonder, what other benefits come with a Paleo lifestyle?

The main concept of their Paleo blog is this: fitness, enjoyment and a healthy lifestyle working in harmony with your genes. It sounds rather good. It’s when we delve behind the motto “eat real food” that we really see the nutritional philosophy that the Paleo lifestyle embodies. It all calls back to the Palaeolithic age, and involves eating what would have been readily available for our hunter-gatherer ancestors.

The basic principle of the Paleo diet revolves around the fact that the way our bodies metabolize food is hardly any different from the way they did in the Stone Age, 10,000 years before arable and livestock farming were introduced. However, the one thing that has changed drastically is the food we’re consuming nowadays. Therefore, by going back to our roots and effectively eating like a caveman, although perhaps in a more civilized manner, we should be able to provide ourselves with all the nutrients and vitamins we need.

Paleo foods include, for example, vegetables, meat, fish, fruit, eggs, nuts and healthy fats. It’s also really important to make sure that all the produce you eat is high quality, and, if possible, grown locally. Things to avoid include cereal and milk products, pulses, sugar, processed plant oils and artificial additives which hide are effectively “anti-nutrients”

Nico embarked on the Paleo diet in 2012, after results from a routine blood test came back low. This prompted him to start the Paleo 30 Day Challenge, and he hasn’t looked back since.

It wasn’t long then until Michaela, his wife, converted to the Paleo diet herself, and it only made sense to develop their passion for Paleo cooking together.

The pair use their blog as a means to make others aware of how to lead a healthy and sustainable lifestyle, as well as answering users’ questions about Paleo and increasing awareness about the diet. Their readers have access to Paleo recipes, articles, E-Books, and mailing lists, meaning they are never short of ideas or inspiration when it comes to adhering to their diet. It’s not really surprising that it’s the biggest German speaking portal for Paleo nutrition and lifestyle on the web.

As well as being successful bloggers, Nico and Michaela are also successful cookbook authors, having written “Paleo – Power for life”, “Paleo – Power every day” and even “Paleo for Starters.” All of these cookbooks provide quick meal solutions in the form of diverse, combinable recipes, which are extremely healthy but also easy to incorporate into your everyday life.
