How it's done:

Are your salads starting to get rather boring? Leaf upon leaf of vitamins and minerals, but lacking in flavor and excitement? Now is the perfect time to try making our homemade croutons, which you can use as a base recipe and develop to your heart’s, and stomach’s, desire. First, melt the butter in a frying pan over medium high heat. Meanwhile, cut bread in half lengthwise, then into strips, and finally into cubes. Add cubes to the butter and season generously with salt and pepper. Fry for approx. 5 - 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until the croutons are evenly browned and at your desired level of crispiness. Remove from the heat and place the croutons on a paper towel to absorb any excess fat.

It's crunch time!

When making croutons, bread quality is the main thing to bear in mind. We’ve found that you get the most impressive results when using ciabatta or baguettes, as the slightly tougher texture of the bread makes for very crispy croutons, perfect for soups and salads. You can also put your own spin on croutons by adding a selection of spices and herbs; such as garlic powder, marjoram, and oregano to enjoy with tomato soups, or add some cayenne pepper and chili powder for a spicy kick with your salad.
